Some of these companies navigated through the challenges of running a remote company, and some companies struggled. Based on our discussions with our friends, one common pattern we saw was that companies struggling with remote work were not using an asynchronous (async) working style.<h2>Getting work done in a remote environment</h2>When everyone is working from the office, it's very easy to ask questions of your team members and resolve issues. We are talking about things that will take a few minutes of discussion.In the remote world, to do the same discussion, we will have to ping the other participants and then start a Zoom call. Share the link and then wait for them to join. Then, have the two-minute call. This assumes that your team members are at their desks at that time. They might be away for lunch. In that case, the meetings need to wait.Even if all the team members are present, getting on a call for every small matter throughout the day can cause "Zoom fatigue."The other issue with these Zoom calls is that there is no record of who said what and what the final decision was. What if one of your team members is on leave? What if you need to bring in another team member from a different project? Without any record of previous discussions, bringing them up to date takes a lot of effort.There is a better way, and that's an async style of working.<h2>What is the async style of working</h2>The async style of working is like handling emails. You don't jump on the email when you receive it immediately. You finish whatever you are doing. When you are on a break or done with your current work, you go and check your email.Similarly, in the async working style, you don't jump on a call anytime you have a question. You post your questions in Slack or any communication tool. The other person will reply to that question whenever that person checks the message.This causes the least amount of disruption in the workflow.<h2>Tools needed to do async work</h2>We already mentioned that you need Slack or any communication tool. For building <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/">Neeto</a>, we primarily use Slack and GitHub. When posting messages earlier, we used to post all the messages using text, and writing long messages used to take time. So, we wanted a fast screen recording tool that recorded our screen and voice. We built <a rel="" class="link" href="https://neeto.link/neetorecord">NeetoRecord</a> to solve the screen recording problem. Now, all Neeto team members record multiple videos daily, thus removing the need for a meeting for minor matters. We still conduct meetings, but those are for big-ticket items. We have been using NeetoRecord internally for a while now. <a rel="" class="link" href="https://neetocal.com/neetocal">NeetoCal</a> is a scheduling software designed for effortless booking and management of various sessions, such as meetings, interviews, and consultations, for both you and your clients.The payments feature in NeetoCal allows you to collect payments for your sessions or appointments. By accepting payments ahead of the session, NeetoCal helps reduce the risk of no-shows. It also saves time and effort in following up with payment requests.After thorough internal testing, we officially launched the payments feature in production in January 2023. The need for such a feature was particularly felt by clients like Headstrong Pro, Somatic Therapy, and others, especially those managing therapy organizations with a multitude of clients. In January, the recorded transaction was 160 GBP.The subsequent months showed significant growth:<ul><li>In February, there was a remarkable surge of 728.5%, with transactions totaling 1160. Notably, this marked NeetoCal's first transaction from India, amounting to Rs. 410 out of the total.</li><li>March witnessed a growth of 58.6%, reaching a transaction value of 1840 GBP.</li><li>April saw a slight decline of -14%, recording transactions of 1580, with 1530 GBP and Rs 50. This was the only month with a month-on-month decline so far.</li><li>May marked a rebound with a transaction value of 3364, showcasing a substantial 113% month-on-month growth.</li><li>June continued the upward trend with transactions totaling 3697, comprising 3597 in GBP and 100 in rupees.</li><li>July maintained the growth streak, recording a transaction of 7825 GBP, a growth of 111.68%. The month also saw an increasing number of clients expressing interest in utilizing the payments feature.</li><li>In August, the total transaction volume for the month reached 8706, resulting in 11% growth.</li><li>September witnessed transactions of 10431 GBP and 25$, contributing to a 20% growth in transactions.</li><li>October recorded a significant sum of 20186.75, demonstrating a 93% growth. This comprised 19898 GBP, 145 dollars, and 143.75 Euros.</li><li>November saw NeetoCal transactions totaling 411.5 Euros, 26549 GBP, and 266 dollars, reaching a grand total of 27226.5. We launched <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetocal">NeetoCal</a> on <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.producthunt.com/products/neetocal">Product Hunt</a> in July 2023. Here's a peek into our very first Product Hunt launch journey.<h2>The Decision to Launch NeetoCal</h2>At <a rel="" class="link" href="https://neeto.com/">Neeto</a>, we are building 20+ products simultaneously. By the time we decided to have a Product Hunt launch, we had four products to choose from: NeetoForm, NeetoDesk, NeetoInvoice and NeetoChat.Initially, we had planned to launch <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoinvoice">NeetoInvoice</a> because this has the maximum number of customers. As discussed in our <a rel="" class="link" href="https://blog.neeto.com/p/how-neeto-got-the-name-neeto">first blog</a>, we used to have a product called AceInvoice. Later, AceInvoice became NeetoInvoice, and we migrated all our customers from AceInvoice to NeetoInvoice.NeetoInvoice was by far the most mature and stable product. So, we decided to go with NeetoInvoice as our first product for the Product Hunt launch.NeetoCal was finishing up, and we started using it internally in the company. The more we used NeetoCal, the more we liked it. We thought we should launch the product which we are most excited about.The trouble was that NeetoCal was the most recent and least battle-tested product. We took the time to write the essential features carefully. We kept the tone of the message professional and even used chatGPT to ensure we have the most polished version of how NeetoCal can be introduced.It was a good write-up. However, we didn't find it exciting. In fact, it was outright dull to read it. It was boring because it was safe writing. It was trying to please everyone.If we don't find our own writing exciting, then that's a problem. It's a problem because if we are not excited about the write-up, how can we expect others to be excited about the product?In our internal discussions, people pitched to highlight the exciting features that we have in NeetoCal. However, as we talked, we realized we had no exciting features. It's not because we didn't build any exciting features. It's because of the space we chose.If we are building software to make it easier to schedule meetings, there is little room to add exciting features. In our internal discussions, the word commodity came up a few times. And then it hit us. It was apparent all along, but we had not noticed it earlier. We have built a commodity software. Our product, NeetoCal, had no exciting features compared to our competitors.So, just before the launch, we changed our introduction, and we stated the obvious. We said what we believed in. The reality is that no one wants to build commodity software. Building commodity software is not exactly what excites the engineering, UX, UI, QA, or marketing teams.In our discussions, someone asked why we built it&nbsp;if it's commodity software. Good question. We could have built something else. We had a nagging feeling that NeetoCal needed to be built. The question is, why did it need to be built?BigBinary has 100+ folks in the company, and less than 5% of the people are paying for the scheduling software. Does it mean the other 95% do not need the scheduling software? No. They need it, and they want to use it. But it's the cost of this scheduling software that prevents them from using it. The average price is around $10/month. Remember, we are talking about folks in India. So $10 is a lot.And then it hit us. NeetoCal needs to be built so that more people can afford scheduling software. We think existing products are way too expensive for the value they provide. This soul-searching also helped us understand that "affordability" is what NeetoCal is all about.So now we decided to highlight the differentiating factor - affordability. That's what we did.We wrote a blog titled <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://blog.neeto.com/p/neetocal-a-calendly-alternative-is">NeetoCal, a calendly alternative, is a commodity and is priced accordingly</a>. All these discussions with NeetoCal users boosted everyone's morale here at NeetoCal. This Product Hunt launch wouldn't succeed without the community's support. So thank you, everyone. Product Hunt Launch Journey of NeetoCal

In a <a rel="" class="link" href="https://blog.neeto.com/p/neeto-products-and-people">previous blog</a>, we saw that at neeto, we are building many products. In most of these products, some things are common, like inviting team members, integrating with Slack, filtering results, etc. In this blog, we will see how we use&nbsp;nanos&nbsp;to share code at Neeto.All the products need to manage their team members. It means people need to be invited, their roles need to be managed, and they need to be deactivated. This feature will be the same in all the products. So, copying and pasting the same code into multiple products is unnecessary.We call this style of breaking a feature into the lowest level of business component that can be plugged into any product a “nano”. <code>neeto-team-members</code> It is a nano. Currently, work is being done to add support for PayPal and Square. When this feature is done and released to the nano then all the products using this nano will get the new features without much extra work. Currently, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetocal">NeetoCal</a>, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoform">NeetoForm</a>, and <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoinvoice">NeetoInvoice</a> can accept payment via Stripe using <code>neeto-payments</code>.We have automation rules in <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetodesk">NeetoDesk</a> and need automation rules in <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoplanner">NeetoPlanner</a>. So we started extracting all the rules-related work to <code>neeto-rules</code> nano. After all, any rule will have almost the same type of UI—define some conditions and then take some actions.As the name suggests <code>neeto-slack</code> nano makes it easier for any product to have Slack integrations. Similarly, neeto-custom-domains make it easier for any product to have a custom domain.It would be an understatement to say that Nanos drives Neeto. Every time we need to copy a feature from one product to another, we convert that feature into a nano. Now, we don’t need to copy-paste; that feature can be used for any Neeto product.

nanos make Neeto better

At <a rel="" class="link" href="https://neeto.com/">Neeto</a>, we are building <a rel="" class="link" href="https://blog.neeto.com/p/neeto-products-and-people">lots of products</a>. As we built more and more products, we ran into the issue of UI consistency. For example, the primary button's color and size would vary from product to product. Filter features would differ from product to product. Checkboxes would look different. Labels, input fields, tabs, and other elements would look inconsistent. We started putting code in the folder to solve the problems of consistency, styling, and code duplication. This folder was shared by all the products.This solved the problem only partially. What we needed was Neeto’s own UI library. <a rel="" class="link" href="https://neeto-ui.neeto.com/">NeetoUI</a> is the UI library of Neeto. It makes it easier to build consistent UI across various Neeto products, and it is currently being used in more than 20 Neeto products. It’s <a rel="" class="link" href="https://github.com/bigbinary/neeto-ui">open source</a>. We decided very early that we would be using&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://tailwindcss.com/">Tailwind CSS</a>&nbsp;to style our products, and hence, we quickly created a few UI components and published the package on npm. We used <a rel="" class="link" href="https://create-react-app.dev/">CRA</a> (Create React App) as a boilerplate and <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.npmjs.com/package/@craco/craco">craco</a> to customize some configurations around <a rel="" class="link" href="https://create-react-app.dev/">CRA</a>.In NeetoUI v1, we mainly focused on extracting standard components from each product we built. NeetoUI provided too much customizability, which led to problems. Hence, we decided to create NeetoUI v2.<h2>NeetoUI v2</h2>In NeetoUI v2, we made several bold decisions.We moved away from Tailwind CSS for styling UI components. In v1, we used Tailwind CSS at the package and host application levels. The host application styles often override the base styles of NeetoUI components, causing all sorts of issues. Debugging these types of problems was very time-consuming. Removing the usage of Tailwind CSS from NeetoUI solved all these issues.We used <a rel="" class="link" href="https://blueprintjs.com/">blueprintjs</a> for overlay components like Pane, Modal, Alert, etc. We got rid of blueprintjs too.We also moved away from <a rel="" class="link" href="https://create-react-app.dev/">CRA</a> and used <a rel="" class="link" href="https://webpack.js.org/">webpack</a> to bundle NeetoUI. This gave us more control over the whole bundling process.Another decision was to move our color palette from Tailwind CSS base colors to a monochrome palette. One of the main reasons for using monochrome this time was that we first wished to tackle the UX aspect of products and then look into the UI aspect of it. A monochrome palette gave us the advantage of bringing in colors in the future. Our design team pitched a basic component library design system with a monochrome color palette, and we liked it. It was quickly rolled into NeetoUI.In NeetoUI v2, we also dropped support for many introduced props due to quickly creating a component library in v1. We stuck to the base design system, which later helped us make sure that all products dealt with actions in a consistent manner.Considering this, we successfully released NeetoUI v2 without external dependency on Tailwind CSS, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://ant.design/">blueprint</a>, or any other component library. There were a few exceptions. We had decided that for a few components like DatePicker, we would not be writing custom components from scratch; instead, we would be overriding the styles of an external library. The only external dependency that we had on an external component library in NeetoUI v2 was <a rel="" class="link" href="https://ant.design/">antD</a>, and that was because antD provided us with the perfect components for DatePicker and other date-time-related components.In NeetoUI v2, we started using <a rel="" class="link" href="https://storybook.js.org/">Storybook</a> to document all our components.<h2>NeetoUI v3</h2>NeetoUI v3 was a cleanup release. We made cosmetic changes along with some performance enhancements and made sure that the components would be scalable for the future.We had reached a stage in product development where NeetoUI was being used consistently across all the products without any unwanted overrides. In v3, we decided to introduce a base color palette for NeetoUI and moved away from the monochrome palette added in v2. We introduced new primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, pastel colors, and shades of grey ranging from 100 to 800. This enhanced the UI of all products. The change in the color palette was not a breaking change, and almost all products switched to v3 in no time except for the ones that needed component-level style customizability.V3 was also when we were rethinking our bundling process. We looked around for better tools and landed upon <a rel="" class="link" href="https://rollupjs.org/">rollup.js</a>. We did a quick POC and realized that <a rel="" class="link" href="https://rollupjs.org/">rollup</a> was superior to our webpack config. Tree shaking, bundling time, and the ease of configuration made it the perfect fit for our new choice of bundler. Using <code>rollup.js</code> reduced our bundle size by quite a considerable margin.Since NeetoUI was being used in all Neeto products for all the UI elements, a bug in NeetoUI or a change in logic could break multiple products simultaneously in a single release. Hence, we decided to write tests for all the NeetoUI, no matter how small the component usage is in the host products. We used <a rel="" class="link" href="https://jestjs.io/">jest</a> and <a rel="" class="link" href="https://testing-library.com/docs/react-testing-library/intro/">react-testing-library</a> to write the unit tests. We added GitHub actions to ensure that any pull request would run these tests. This ensured that post v3, no changes in NeetoUI brought any unknown bug in any of the Neeto products.<h2>NeetoUI v4</h2>The NeetoUI v4 release focused on design systems, design tokens, a11y, semantics, and scalable solutions.Although we had been maintaining a design system, we noticed inconsistencies between NeetoUI components and their corresponding designs in Figma. This was mainly due to delays in updating Figma files after changes were made in NeetoUI. We faced conflicts in terms of design tokens, color palettes, and component naming conventions between the UI and UX teams. However, we were able to build a design system from scratch that built NeetoUI v4 in a month.With a solid design system ready, the NeetoUI team started pixel-perfecting every component. We were also keen on introducing a11y and semantics and hence, we started off with the basics of making sure that all elements can be tabbed through, making sure that focus is trapped within an overlay, and much more.Since the release of NeetoUI, we have received multiple requests to allow for the theming of the color palette from the host application. In v4, we introduced <a rel="" class="link" href="https://neeto-ui.neeto.com/?path=/docs/customize-css-variables--custom-branding">CSS variables</a> powered by SCSS files, which allowed users to customize any color from the palette to fit their needs. This means that users no longer need to overwrite all CSS class names if they want to change the primary color to their brand palette; they can override the CSS variable for NeetoUI's primary color.Till v4, NeetoUI didn’t work well with IDEs. We had auto-completion support only for component names. To fix this, we added <code>.d.ts</code> files in which we defined the component data types. It significantly helped improve IntelliSense and autocompletion of component props served from the package.NeetoUI is our dedicated UI library, providing a consistent and scalable UI design across all our products. Our journey from NeetoUI v1 to v4 has been full of learning experiences, and we are very happy with what we have built. With NeetoUI, we are confident that we can continue to deliver exceptional user experiences to all our users.NeetoUI is <a rel="" class="link" href="https://github.com/bigbinary/neeto-ui">open source</a>. NeetoUI is the UI library of Neeto

Typically, companies work on one product and try to make that product a grand success. Only then will they venture into other products.At <a rel="" class="link" href="https://neeto.com/">Neeto</a>, we are building 20+ products from the get-go. Why are we not following the path followed by other companies?In 2020, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://bigbinary.com/">BigBinary</a>, for the first time, hired some students from the college as part of campus placement. We recruited 14 students. Before that, BigBinary had only hired experienced Ruby on Rails engineers.We needed to teach HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React.js, and Ruby on Rails to these 14 freshers. We did introductory write-ups for these courses at <a rel="" class="link" href="https://bigbinaryacademy.com/">BigBinary Academy</a>. Teaching people all these technologies was hard work, but we prevailed. We saw the result of our work: All these freshers performed very well.Buoyed by the success of our campus recruitment, next year, we offered 60 students to join BigBinary. All these freshers took the same course materials published at BigBinary Academy.A typical consulting company provides some basic training to freshers and then puts them on the client project at a lower rate. We wanted to avoid having freshers learn on the client project.This meant that these freshers would have to work on some internal projects. We started discussing what dummy projects they should build.After some deliberation, we decided that working on dummy projects doesn't bring seriousness. We wanted our freshers to work on real projects so that they fully understood how projects are executed in the real world. We should be using these projects in our day-to-day lives so that they can feel the pain of breaking something or the system being down.We decided to build a product called NitroHelp. Later, NitroHelp was split into three products: NeetooChat, NeetoDesk, and NeetoKB. 9 freshers worked on NitroHelp, and we still had many more engineers who needed projects to work on.At this time, we had to make a call: Should we add more products or more engineers to a single product?If we add more engineers to a product, they all will need features to work on. We would have to hire many product managers quickly to create the tickets and build the pipeline of the features they would work on. We would also have to employ many UX folks rapidly to work with these product managers to create the interfaces.BigBinary is a consulting company. Our goal was to hire students from the colleges and teach them programming so that they could do an excellent job with consulting. We didn't want to have many product managers and UX folks, and this helped us decide to build many different products.And that's what we did. We decided to build NeetoCal, NeetoQuiz, NeetoWireframe, NeetoPlanner, NeetoCI, NeetoDeploy, NeetoSocial, and many more. We decided to put two engineers in each product. Having only two engineers in each product helped reduce the communication overhead.Another decision was that the engineers working on the products would act as product managers. They would examine the competing products and build the core of the products.We did hire three UX engineers to support all the development work.At the end of the whole process, we had close to 20 products. As we started working on these products, we realized that almost all of them needed some basic standard stuff. For example, tables, sidebars, filters, column info, settings, etc., are required by all of them. We wrapped all these UI elements under the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://neeto-ui.neeto.com/">NeetoUI library</a>.Then we noticed that almost all products need "Slack integration," "Stripe integration," "webhooks," etc. Rather than duplicating the code, we started extracting the common elements as a standard utility tool. We started calling them "nanos." We have written a detailed blog on how we use nanos.Initially, we were worried that without a product manager, how would we build all these products? Who would decide which feature to create and which to ignore? Building a feature means making many small choices. We empowered our engineers to make all those decisions.In this work style, the engineers work on everything from requirement gathering to wireframing to development to testing and finally to deployment. However, the engineers' work doesn't end there. They still need to write helpful articles about the features, tweet about the newly launched feature, and write a blog about it. If the customer contacts them, they also need to provide customer support.The best part of building products at Neeto was that the engineers were involved in every aspect of the product, from the very beginning to customer support. And this is precisely what we wanted. We wanted these freshers to get a feel for building a genuine product, and they built real products used by people worldwide.Building 20+ products in parallel is quite a challenge. Sometimes, it is overwhelming, but it's also fun.

Why Neeto is building so many products

This blog is all about what we are building at Neeto. We would look at the “products” part of “Neeto products and people”.In the <a target="_blank" rel="" class="link" href="https://neeto.com/blog/how-neeto-got-the-name-neeto">previous article</a>, we mentioned that at <a rel="" class="link" href="https://bigbinary.com/">BigBinary</a>, we were already using AceInvoice for time tracking and invoicing. We didn’t want to add any new features to AceInvoice, so we decided to build nitroHelp and nitroForm. NitroHelp has three main features: chat, email-based ticketing, and a knowledge base. After a few months of development, it became clear to us that nitroHelp should be broken into three different products. There was minimal commonality between the three different features, and one look at the codebase made that very clear. We had folders like “chat,” “desk,” and “KB” everywhere. We had to namespace a lot of models because common model names were taken, and the unit tests took longer to run. We had to run the whole test suite even though something had only changed in the KB area. While splitting nitroHelp, we changed the name from “nitro” to “Neeto”. So now we had <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetochat">NeetoChat</a>, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetodesk">NeetoDesk</a>, and <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetokb">NeetoKB</a>.Soon, we realized that users were not going to log into each of the products separately. So now we needed a single sign-on mechanism, and hence we built NeetoAuth. NeetoAuth is not a product that others can use. It’s an internal tool that manages authentication for all the neeto products.nitroForm was also renamed to <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoform">NeetoForm</a>. Working on NeetoForm proved to be a lot more challenging than we had earlier estimated. NeetoForm has a lot of surface area, and we needed to cover significant ground. In the beginning, NeetoForm supported both the “card style” and the “long form” style. This created many design challenges. It also created engineering complexities, and we kept running into edge cases.Finally, after months of setbacks, we decided to remove the support for “card style.”This immediately helped us deliver features at a faster pace and with more stability. At this time, NeetoForm is relatively stable, and our clients are happy using it.As we were building new features,, we needed a way to let our users know about the new features that were being delivered. After some deliberations, we started working on <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetochangelog">NeetoChangelog</a>. Currently, NeetoChangelog is working great. In fact, if you sign up for any of the neeto products, you can click on “what’s new” to see NeetoChangelog in action.As we started building more products, we needed to worry about what the UI would look like. Some folks in the company knew Figma, so we had a couple of sessions with them to learn Figma. Folks also tried to learn Figma from online resources. We found the learning curve for Figma to be very high for our engineers. This is not a knock against Figma. Folks who are familiar with Figma love it, and it's a great product. What we needed was a low-fidelity way of discussing what the interface would look like. Unlike professional UX folks, our goal was not to create a pixel-perfect design but to have a rough sketch of the UI.After some deliberations, we decided to work on a POC to build a wireframing solution, and thus <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetowireframe">NeetoWireframe</a> came to life.So far, we have been discussing product features, execution, deployment, etc, in Github issues. This meant that Github issues became very noisy. We decided to use GitHub only for the actual issues and not for the product feature discussion. They have more than 500 counselors on their platform. Deciding which patient would see which counselor was being done using a large Excel file. We started building <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetocal">NeetoCal</a> in a rush, and in a short span of time, we got it working. We also got Stripe payments working with NeetoCal. Our client successfully receives payments anytime a booking is made.We have been using AceInvoice for a few years for time tracking and invoicing. At this time, we had more than ten Neeto products under development. We decided to migrate AceInvoice to <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoinvoice">NeetoInvoice</a> so that we would have a consistent set of code to maintain. Migrations are always tricky. After months and months of work, we were ready, and then, one day, we migrated all the users and their data from AceInvoice to NeetoInvoice. We did get a handful of issues from our customers, but overall, it was a very smooth experience.In the meantime, the time had come to conduct interviews with the folks in college for the following recruiting season. More than 600 folks responded to our call for the <a rel="" class="link" href="https://offcampushiring.bigbinary.com/about">BigBinary off-campus interview</a>. We checked with the existing vendors who provide technical assessment services, and the cost was coming up to be more than $20,000. So, we decided to build <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetorunner">NeetoRunner</a>. NeetoRunner would be a “code assessment” tool.It was an extremely high-pressure project since we had only a few weeks to build it. We built it, and it worked almost. We didn’t do any stress testing, and when more than 600 people started using NeetoRunner at the same time, then the database began to run out of connections. While the assessment was going on, we had to upgrade the database plan on Heroku to get more connections. Other than that, everything else worked fine, and NeetoRunner proved to be a winner.As the products started maturing, we needed to do a better job of testing them, and thus, we formed a “QA team.” We started using third-party tools to manage “test cases.” However, we found these tools to be extremely expensive. Since these tools charge per user, we couldn’t give access to developers who don’t need to see test cases very often. We decided to build <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetotestify">NeetoTestify</a>. Next week, we will be migrating all the test cases from the third-party tool to NeetoTestify, and we are very excited about it.In August 2022, Heroku announced that free dynos would go away. We have been using Heroku review apps for all our products, and this change in plan has increased our costs significantly since we are building so many products. In the future, we plan to add even more products. It means our Heroku cost will keep going up linearly.We decided to do a quick POC to see if we can spin up something to build the review apps for the pull requests. We named this product NeetoReview. The POC worked, and slowly we migrated to NeetoReview for the generation of all the review apps for all the Neeto products. This was done by the end of Nov 2022. In a span of 9 weeks, we had gone from a mere idea to a complete migration off of Heroku.NeetoReview kept getting better, and in Feb 2023, we migrated all the staging applications of all the Neeto products from Heroku to NeetoReview. Well, now NeetoReview can be used for things other than just “review apps.” So, we changed the name from NeetoReview to <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetodeploy">NeetoDeploy</a>.NeetoDeploy is shaping up to be a good Heroku alternative. As of this writing, Heroku is still serving all production instances. BigBinary is primarily a Ruby on Rails and React consulting company. So, building NeetoDeploy was out of our comfort zone as it involved a lot of DevOps and Kubernetes skills. In the coming weeks and months, we will be discussing how we are building this Heroku alternative.While we were building <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetochat">NeetoChat</a>, we wondered why we needed to ask the users what they needed help with. We know that no one wants to chat with a support agent. People contact support agents because they feel stuck. We thought if we could somehow see what the user was doing just before clicking on the “chat icon,” that would give us a glimpse into what the user wanted to do but could not do.That desire to see what the user was doing before contacting the support agent led us down the path of recording users’ sessions while they were online. This resulted in a new Neeto product called <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoreplay">NeetoReplay</a>. Using NeetoReplay now, any website or web product owner can see what the users are doing on their site. NeetoReplay has proved to be an immensely useful tool in fixing issues we didn’t even know existed.Monitoring the health of our APIs and workers is essential. We are building NeetoMonitor to do that.<a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetosite">NeetoSite</a> is being built so that we can create simple websites without too much complexity.As the name suggests, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoquiz">NeetoQuiz</a> is for building quizzes, and <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetocrm">NeetoCRM</a> is for CRM.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetosocial">NeetoSocial</a>&nbsp;is a tool we are building to provide “social media analytics” and reporting.While building NeetoDeploy, we gained experience in handling Kubernetes. Leveraging that experience, we jumped in on building <a rel="" class="link" href="https://www.neeto.com/neetoci">NeetoCI</a> to run our unit and cypress tests. Running Cypress tests is proving to be very expensive, and we hope that switching to NeetoCI will cost us a lot less.If you made it all the way to the end of this blog, you might be wondering why Neeto is building all these products and why Neeto is building business tools (NeetoChat) and developer tools (NeetoDeploy). Why build all these products without ensuring the success of even a single product? These are all good questions that we have asked ourselves many times. Neeto products and people

As a consulting company, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://bigbinary.com/">BigBinary</a> needed to track and invoice time. In the early stages, we used tools from other vendors. After a while, we had a pretty good idea of what we needed in time tracking and invoicing software.In Sep 2013, we started the development of a similar service. It was on a slow track because we worked on it whenever we had downtime from the client work.In March 2017, we bought the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://aceinvoice.com">aceinvoice.com</a>. The other domain in consideration was <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://timenano.com">timenano.com</a>. After a few months, we started using AceInvoice for all BigBinary activities.We didn’t want to keep adding features to AceInvoice that we wouldn’t use. So now we needed a new project to work on during our downtime.From time to time, we will get support questions on AceInvoice, and we decided to build a customer help software. First, we needed a FAQ-type questions management service. Since the name of the invoicing software was aceinvoice we looked for acehelp and it was available.In May 2018, we bought the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://acehelp.com">acehelp.com</a>.At that time, <a rel="" class="link" href="https://elm-lang.org/">Elm</a> was a new emerging programming language that captured our fascination. Working with Elm didn’t go very well. It had a very high learning curve. After six months of development, we had made very little progress. So we ditched Elm and started development with React.js from scratch.Around the same time, BigBinary hired engineers from various colleges for campus recruitment. Now we needed a project for them to work on to learn Ruby on Rails and React. acehelp was primarily a knowledge base software. Since chat software is most likely to use a knowledge base software, we thought the next product should be a chat product. However, the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://acechat.com">acechat.com</a> was taken.In Jan 2020, we bought the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitrochat.com">nitrochat.com</a>. We also bought the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitrohelp.com">nitrohelp.com</a> so that we could move acehelp to nitrohelp.A few months later pandemic started, and many clients released our engineers. So now we had a lot of engineers available to do internal work. We have been using Calendly for a while, so we know what needs to be in scheduling software.In April 2020, we bought the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitrocal.com">nitrocal.com</a>.Because of the pandemic, all the schools and teachers had to go online. From what we gathered, we thought the education community needed quizzing software. In July, we noticed that <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitroquiz.com">nitroquiz.com</a> was already taken. We thought all the other products were moving to nitro so we should move <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://aceinvoice.com">aceinvoice.com</a> to <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitroinvoice.com">nitroinvoice.com</a>. But <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitroinvoice.com">nitroinvoice.com</a> was also taken. At the same time, we decided to split nitrohelp into nitrochat, nitrodesk, and nitroKB. However, <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitrodesk.com">nitrodesk.com</a> was taken.In August 2020, we bought the domains <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitrodesk.io">nitrodesk.io</a>, <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitroform.io">nitroform.io</a>, <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitroquiz.io">nitroquiz.io</a>, and <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitrocal.io">nitrocal.io</a>.In September 2020, we bought the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitroindex.io">nitroindex.io</a> so that all the products could be under one brand of “nitro”.However, we had a problem. <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitroindex.io">nitroindex.io</a> is a terrible domain name. Secondly, we would have to buy a new domain for each new product, and it was increasingly difficult to ensure that the domain was available. For example, <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://nitrochangelog.com">nitrochangelog.com</a> was already taken.It was almost impossible to find a larger number of domains where both domain names are dictionary words. So, we decided to look at non-dictionary names.In Oct 2020, we bought the domain <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="link" href="http://neeto.com">neeto.com</a> for $4895.Two years later, in Oct 2022, we are writing our first blog. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll talk about how we are building neeto, our technology decisions, our process, our design decisions, mobile development, the challenges we face, hiring, project management, consistency issues, and much more.
